Description

THE LATE EVENING” (1961) by Pēteris Sābulis, oil, on canvas board, 24”x20”, wood frame

Sābulis, Pēteris

Was born September 21st, 1909 (1923 ?) , in Rīga, the capital of Latvija, where he finished the Academy of Arts, the Department of Painting; got married.. He participated in the exhibitions and worked under the quideance of the such brilliant Latvian painters as Jonāss Miesnieks and Romāns Suta, also Brencēns (ilustrator of Brāļi Kaudzītes „Mērnieku laiki”). Before the second Soviet occupation (1944.) he fled his native country. For several years he lived in the Germany and was among a few Latvian artists, who attended and also finished the Art studies there.

He came to United States in early 1950-ies, at first in New York, then – some other places in East Coast and L.A. He studied engeniering and worked in that field, but he never forget the painting. Country and rural landscapes, still-life, some wonderful portraits of his wife – was the main subjects he painted. His last drawings, oil paintings and pastels were made in the seventies. He always attended workshops, frequently visited museums and exhibitions, red books and articles about other artists. Gets sick and the doctor prohibits him to work.

In 1989. he came to conclusion that the best paintings are made intermixing the three colors: white, chrome blue (kobalts) and dark redish-brown. The others are nonsence. Wasted time. (It is very hard to talk with him now. He do not want to reveal the things about him and is very suspicious..) Loves the paintings made by Kalnāre... - By Inguna G, 1995, Los Angeles CA
